Criteria for Inclusion
Materials selected for review in the TE-MAT database support the work of
professional development providers as they plan and implement programs for
pre-service or in-service teachers in K-12 mathematics/science education.
To be included in the TE-MAT database, materials must meet certain criteria.
Although the database is designed to include all materials that meet the
specific criteria, inclusion in the database should not be considered an
endorsement of a material.
The materials in this database must focus on content, instruction, and/or
professional development in areas of science and/or mathematics, and be framed
in such a way that they are relevant for the professional development of
pre-service or in-service teachers.
All materials must be published (commercially or non-commercially) and
accessible to the general public; i.e., it is not necessary to attend a
workshop or professional development program to obtain them. Generally,
materials have a publication/production date of 1990 or later; however, some
earlier works in mathematics/science education have been included based on
recommendations from experienced mathematics/science educators.
The following types of materials are not included in the TE-MAT
database:
-
Materials that are strictly web-based, as there are numerous issues (e.g.,
accessibility and fluidity of this medium) that would require a very different
approach for including reviews and references to those resources;
-
Materials that are specific to a single curriculum program or set of student
activities and do not include general information about content or pedagogical
approaches;
-
Journal articles or monthly/quarterly publications that do not have a unifying
theme or targeted professional development issue that makes the material a
useful resource for professional development providers;
-
Materials that are unavailable in English;
-
Materials that are directed primarily toward non-teacher groups (e.g.,
principals, parents, community leaders);
-
Materials that do not focus on science or mathematics.
