Looking at Learning... again. Part 1: An eight-part Workshop Series for K-12 Teachers of Mathematics and Science

Reviewed Date: 1/1/2001

I. Description of Materials

This set of materials includes eight videotapes featuring leading educators sharing teaching strategies, primarily related to mathematics and science in grades K-12. An accompanying 122-page guide provides information for professional developers to conduct eight workshops based on these videotapes.

II. Purpose and Audience

The purpose of this videotape series is to share information provided by seven leading educational theorists and to provide teachers with the opportunity to "explore, discuss, critique and ultimately implement the ideas and strategies" of these theorists (p. 4). Teachers of mathematics and science at all levels are the intended audience for these materials, but the strategies and ideas can be applied to most educational settings.

III. Content and Quality

Looking at Learning…Again provides opportunities for teachers to hear and view leading educators describe their theories of teaching and learning, to see classroom clips that show teachers implementing these theories, and to participate in dialogue about what they see and hear. Each of the eight videotapes is the foundation of a two-hour workshop that is detailed for professional development providers in the accompanying guide. Each of the videotapes focuses on one educational strategy and provides classroom experiences showing the strategy in action. The educators included in this series, Eleanor Duckworth, Hubert Dysai, Howard Gardner, Constance Kamii, Joseph Novak, Mitchell Resnick, and William Schmidt, provide insight into their teaching strategies and the applicability of those strategies to the classroom. The workshop guide provides detailed workshop agendas; timelines; background information; homework for the participants and a set of related readings. Also included is a description of a "Moon Journal," an ongoing learning experience for participants to reflect on their personal beliefs about learning as well as applications to student learning. A companion website provides more information as well as opportunities for interaction with colleagues nationally through online discussion.

The video series is an engaging resource for teachers. The caliber of these educators provides a unique opportunity for teachers to see demonstrations of current theories related to effective strategies. The participating students, teachers, and educational experts represent a diverse set of views and people, and a variety of teaching techniques and ideas are presented and explored. These techniques are shared on videotapes that are of high technical quality and content. The combination of the educational theorists sharing their thinking and interacting with teacher interviewers, video clips of classroom applications, the ongoing moon study, and online opportunities create a rich learning experience for participants.

IV. Reviewers' Ideas for Using this Material

The material in this video series can be used by individual teachers as a resource to reflect on their own practice, for a series of professional development workshops, or as the subject of ongoing faculty meetings. Although teachers can view the series individually, group study that included conversations with colleagues around the ideas and issues presented would be more effective. Because the structure and content of the program spans grades K-12, it could be used to encourage K-12 articulation and the development of learning communities among teachers. The workshop guide provides detailed outlines beneficial to both experienced and novice professional developers and includes activities, homework assignments, and related readings that facilitate implementation of the materials.

V. Comments and Cautions

One reviewer pointed out that these materials would be most effective used over time, without skipping parts of the videotapes or discussions. Teachers' integration of the strategies presented would also need to take place over time.
