Science and Mathematics for All Students

Reviewed Date: 8/1/1999

I. Description of Materials

This 34-page booklet addresses equity issues, including the "underrepresentation of women and people of color," (p. 1) in K-12 science and mathematics education.

II. Purpose and Audience

The intended purpose of this resource is to provide research-based rationales and ideas for addressing equity issues in science and mathematics classrooms. The target audience is teachers of K-12 students.

III. Content and Quality

This well-organized booklet is concise and easy to read. An initial summary of the key themes from current research on the underrepresentation of women and minorities in science and mathematics provides the foundation for a discussion of research-recommended ideas and strategies for achieving equity. The strategies include: having high expectations for all students; providing a welcoming classroom environment; using a variety of teaching strategies that accommodate diverse needs; and helping students make connections. Although the strategies are a product of equity research, "it will be obvious to many readers that they reflect practices that are at the core of good teaching and therefore will benefit all students rather than only those traditionally filtered out of the science and mathematics pipeline" (p. 2).

A brief section discusses the importance of and provides ideas for the professional development of teachers. The booklet includes real-life examples from classrooms in the Northwest region of the United States, and ends with a list of resources that could be tapped for additional information.

IV. Reviewers' Ideas for Using this Material

Reviewers noted that this booklet could serve multiple functions in a professional development setting. It provides a research-based framework for equity considerations that would be helpful background for all teachers, and is a concise summary of a variety of approaches and techniques available to teachers. Professional development could focus on the various practices for ensuring engagement of all students in science and mathematics, giving teachers the opportunity to try them in their classrooms and reflect on these experiences, both individually and as a group.
